Mammillaria insularis Gates in Cact. Succ. Journ. Amer. 10 : 25, with fig., 1938.
Caespitose with heavy fleshy roots, stems flattened-globular with
watery sap; axils naked or slightly woolly. Central spine 1, 1cm. long, acicular, hooked, black-tipped;
Radial spines 20-30, 5mm. long, acicular, white.
Flower 15-25mm. long, funnelform, outer perianth segments light
green, inner light pink with white raid-stripe. Fruit 1cm. long, clavate,
orange-red tending to be hollow; seeds dull black, pitted.
Mexico; Baja California, along mica-schist ledges on outermost islet
of Smith Island group, Los Angeles Bay, 29° 05'N, 113° 30'W, May 1935, Gates 523 (DS).
(Flowers described from living plants in the field by Lindsay in 1936, and fruit described from cultivated plants).
Comparing this species with Mammillaria schumannii, type of the genus Bartschella, Gates remarked that several
Mammillarias, notably M.denudata, have a tendency for the fruit to be hollow and drop their seed through a basal pore as the fruit falls.
M. insularis is often considered very close to M.boolii, which occurs
on the headland of San Pedro Bay, on the other shore of the Gulf of
California. Both are members of the M.dioica complex. Foster (in J. Mamm. Soc. 7:4. 1967)
points out their similarities and suggests varietal status would be more appropriate for M.boolii.
